A serious traffic accident occurred in US Highway 40 Tuesday afternoon August 2 just a short distance east of Granby near the base of Red Dirt Hill.

Regional law enforcement officials were preparing to shut down US 40 for a period Tuesday afternoon as a Flight for Life helicopter arrived on scene to begin airlifting injured individuals involved in the accident. Officials from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office explained an accident investigation was beginning Tuesday afternoon as both east and westbound traffic came to a stand still.

County officials were sparse with details Tuesday afternoon as the situation remained in flux. According to non-law enforcement individuals on the scene though the accident occurred when a dump truck heading west on US 40 encountered traffic that was backed up towards the bottom of Red Dirt Hill. The dump truck swerved to avoid colliding with the backed up vehicles and ended up going into a nearby ravine.

Sources said the driver of the dump truck was raising his arms and communicating with first responders as he was being prepared for transport on the Flight for Life helicopter.

This story will be updated when officials are able to release additional details.
