Sheriff’s department returns to Hot Sulphur building after fire prompts restoration project
Roughly eight months after a fire forced a late night evacuation of the Grand County Jail and the 911 Dispatch Center officials from the Grand County Sheriff’s Department are back at work in their offices in Hot Sulphur Springs.
On Nov. 6 last year a fire sparked by a ventilation fan inside a bathroom on the main floor of the Sheriff’s Office prompted evacuations of the building and resulted in a multi-month construction project to repair damage done from the blaze. While the construction work was ongoing most of the Sheriff’s Department operated from offices in the Grand County Administration Building or at other locations.
Inmates at the County Jail were briefly moved to the Routt County Jail due to air quality concerns and the 911 Dispatch Center was temporarily contained within a remote operations center. Work on the project included the replacement of insulation and ceilings on the office’s main floor along with spraying of special smoke damage mitigation painting products.
Walls in and around the bathroom where the fire originated had to be ripped out and replaced and the bathroom itself was essentially rebuilt entirely. Additionally some flooring work was done in the building’s basement related to a sewer line backup that occurred shortly after the fire. Tabernash based firm Rocky Mountain Catastrophe & Restoration performed the work.
Lieutenant Dan Mayer with the Sheriff’s Office said he and other members of the department made the transition back to the building on July 9.
