Sheriff’s Office to join DEA’s National Drug Take Back Day
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office is participating in National Drug Take Back Day. The event goes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the sheriff’s office in Hot Sulphur Springs.
Community members can stop by at 670 Spring Street in Hot Sulphur Springs to safely dispose of of unwanted, unused or expired medications in an effort to avoid the drugs leading to an accidental poisoning, overdose or abuse, according to a news release.
In addition, proper disposal prevents medicines from entering drinking water sources, which can happen when medications are poured down a drain or flushed down a toilet.
“The proper disposal of medicines is vital to both protecting the lives of those around us and taking care of our planet,” the release stated.
The sheriff’s office will accept the following items: prescriptions, prescription patches, prescription medication, prescription ointments, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, samples, medications for pets, and vape pens or other e-cigarette devices that have had the batteries removed. If the battery cannot be removed, individuals can check with large electronic chain stores who may accept the vape pen or e-cigarette devices for proper disposal.
The following items will not be accepted: needles or sharps, aerosol cans (inhalers), thermometers, hydrogen peroxide, medications from businesses or clinics, non-prescription ointments, lotions or liquids.
“A quick stop at the sheriff’s office is an easy step that we can all take to protect our loved ones and help keep our community safe,” Sheriff Brett Schroetlin expressed. “We are proud to partner with the Drug Enforcement Administration to raise awareness about the importance of safely disposing of expired or unused medications in the home.”
For sixteen years, DEA’s Drug Take Back Day has helped people safely dispose of unneeded medications. In partnership with local law enforcement agencies, such as the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, the day has removed more than 19.8 million pounds of medication from circulation since its inception.
The sheriff’s office has a secure MedReturn Drug Collection Unit is always available in its front lobby 24 hours a day, seven days a week for easy disposal of excess drugs. Learn more about what is and what is not accepted at Co.Grand.Co.Us/1406/Medication-Drop-Off.
