Shirra Bohlender: What happened to plans, money for Grand County Events Center?

To The Editor:

When I moved to Grand County nearly 10 years ago, there was a BIG fundraising effort under way for the Grand County Events Center.

As I understood it, the Events Center was to be constructed to offer a location for a wide variety of events from horse competitions, 4-H events, dog shows, etc, that would bring revenue to our county. The plan was to have an indoor space so that these events could take place year-round.

I participated in several fundraising efforts, including a couple horse competitions, but I believe the last one was well over seven years ago. The nonprofit organization seems to have disappeared, along with any money that was raised toward the building.

I know that it takes time to gather funds for such an undertaking, but I got to thinking … what happened to the money that I and so many others donated toward this cause? And what happened to the plan of such a center? Does anybody out there have an answer?

The Grand County Events Center was granted nonprofit status, so who ended up with the funds? I would hate to think that those monies went to something, or someone, other than what was intended? Where should I start looking into this? Can the newspaper help out with an investigation of sorts? Thanks for your consideration.
