Silverthorne council OKs Lowe’s

SILVERTHORNE – After seven hours of testimony, discussion and presentations, the Silverthorne Town Council voted 4-2 to approve the final site plan for a Lowe’s Home-Improvement Warehouse at the corner of Buffalo Mountain Drive and Wildernest Road.

Several members of the council said the approval amounted to a land-use decision, and that the council’s duty was to determine whether the proposed development meets the requirements of the Silverthorne Town Code and the Town Comprehensive Plan.

“What we have before us tonight is not about our personal preferences,” Councilmember Bruce Butler said. “If we want rule of law and equal access, we need to have rules and laws that apply equally to everyone.”

Councilmembers Darrick Wade and David Preaus cast the two opposing votes. Wade proposed postponing the decision for six months to allow for more study of economic impacts, sustainability issues and architectural features.

The council also voted 4-2, by the same vote count, on a final on-site wetlands disturbance permit. Members voted unanimously in favor of a final off-site wetlands disturbance permit.
