Sky-Hi staff wins coveted award
The Sky-Hi News has been selected as the 2009 Swift Award Winner for Newsroom Excellence Non-Daily by the board of directors of Swift Communications.
The award applauds the newspaper’s “Giant Effort by a Small Staff” for both its print and online editions.
Strong competition for Swift Awards takes place annually among the company’s 49 newspapers in Colorado, Nevada, California and Oregon.
“Our staff is stoked and rightfully proud,” said managing editor Drew Munro. “Given the challenges we have faced during the past year and a half, this extraordinary achievement is a fitting reward for the hard work our dedicated and talented employees turn in on a daily basis.”
The entry for the award included website and print coverage of an early Sunday morning motel fire in Granby that started with pre-dawn photographs by Byron Hetzler, followed by an online story that morning and culminating in two print stories; columns by longtime contributor Jon de Vos; and, stories and fiction by Middle Park High School students.
The other two finalists in the competition have substantially larger staffs than the Sky-Hi News.
“This goes to show what a small staff with a big heart can accomplish,” said Publisher Kim Burner.
