Snowboarder dies near Winter Park

WINTER PARK- An approximately 49-year old male snowboarder and longtime resident of the Fraser Valley died while snowboarding on U.S. Forest Service land, near Winter Park Resort, outside of the ski area boundary. At 4:05 p.m.., Feb. 11, Winter Park Ski Patrol received a missing person report of a lost snowboarder in the dense trees east of Mary Jane mountain in an area known as 40 Gate. The snowboarder had entered the U.S. Forest Service land via an access gate.

Ski Patrol, with authorization and assistance from the Grand County Sheriff’s Department, immediately began efforts to locate the missing man. Patrollers found the unresponsive man in a tree well and began rescue efforts. He was later pronounced dead. The man was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

The resort extends their deepest sympathies to the family and friends affected by this tragic event. We are all profoundly saddened by this accident.
