Granby Ranch’s SolVista Ski Basin is romancing the admirals of mountain-biking to bring back the Mountain Bike National Championships to Granby for a second consecutive year.
A verbal agreement to again stage the races at the Granby ski area has been struck between the ranch and USA Cycling, according to Andrea Smith, spokesperson of USA Cycling.
The races are slated for the weekend of July 15-18.
“It’s definitely one of the smallest resorts that’s ever hosted this,” Smith said. “It’s a big deal for that community.”
As many at 1,300 to 1,500 racers compete in the juniors, masters and professional competitions during the multi-day event.
In certain race categories, winners automatically qualify to attend the subsequent world championships.
The various events require vastly different types of terrain, such as for downhill, cross country and four cross.
Among the elite racers who competed at Granby’s venue last year were five Olympic level racers.
Past locales for the mountain bike championships are Mount Snow resort in Vermont, Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania, and Lake Tahoe, Calif.
Smith recently told Mountain Bike Editor Sue George of Cyclingnews that Granby Ranch will be tweaking parts of the basin to accommodate the event, such as re-doing the cross country course to allow for better spectator viewing and moving the expo area over to open the main area up for teams and vendors to create a more “festival-like” atmosphere.
“They already have great downhill courses and a great four-cross course in Granby,” Smith said.
“And it’s the community there. Granby embraces this event.”
