Southwest Colorado counties oppose federal water rights in national monuments

CORTEZ, Colo. (AP) – A federal plan to take water rights at a southwest Colorado national monument is meeting local resistance.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has filed for water rights in Canyon of the Ancients National Monument in Montezuma and Dolores counties.

Both counties have filed letters of opposition.

The federal government says they’re already using 13 springs within the monument and that the applications just clarifies water rights.

But the counties and local ranchers fear they could one day lose water for livestock that graze the monument.

The dispute will be settled by the Colorado Division of Water Resources.
