Granby " Flying Heels Rodeo kicks off Saturday and Sunday

Back by popular demand, the world-renowned Westernaires will be performing Saturday and Sunday, May 24-25, during the first events of the 2008 Flying Heels Rodeo Series at the arena in Granby.
This will be the second year that the Westernaires have opened Grand County’s rodeo season. Its 75 riders will perform their spectacular mounted drill routines as well as daredevil trick riding.
In addition to the Westernaires’ performances, this weekend’s Flying Heels Rodeos will have all the events sure to thrill rodeo fans. The action starts at 3 p.m. with a Buck-A-Roo Rodeo for junior cowboys and cowgirls. After the youngsters’ events, the Open Rodeo begins at 7 p.m.
The events in the Buck-A-Roo Rodeo includes: Peewee (ages 5 and under) ” goat undecorating; Junior (ages 6-8) ” barrel racing and pole bending; Intermediate (ages 9-13) ” barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping, goat tying, team roping and steer riding; and Senior (ages 14-18) ” barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping, goat tying, tie down roping, team roping and junior bull riding.
The Flying Heels’ Open Rodeo, which begins at 7 p.m., includes these exciting events: bull riding, bareback riding, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, mixed team roping, team roping, barrel racing and century team roping. Also included is everyone’s favorite, the mutton bustin’ event, in which youngsters attempt to ride very frisky sheep.
After the two-day opening events this Memorial Day weekend, the Flying Heels Rodeo Series will stage a rodeo every Saturday through June. The series finale will take place Saturday, July 5, which is the same evening of Granby’s Fourth of July fireworks spectacular.
The Flying Heels Rodeo Series always features some of the best local and regional competitors who ride and rope for prize money and series award points.
Along with all the traditional rodeo events, this year’s Flying Heels series will once again be featuring unique special events, musical performances by great entertainers and much more.
The public is encouraged to attend all of the series rodeos. Admission is $10 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-12 and seniors over age 65.
