Kremmling " Scrappy Rangely team ends Lady Mustangs’ season
February 23, 2009
The season for the Lady Mustang basketball team of West Grand ended in disappointment in Rangely as the Panthers won the first round of district play 46-31.
“I feel badly for the girls because they played so hard and so well all season long. We all wanted to play for a few more weeks,” coach Larry Banman said. “They have had a great season and one game doesn’t take that away.”
Rangley’s full-court press and man-to-man defense gave the Mustang fits throughout the game, and turnovers proved to be the undoing for West Grand.
“The Panthers are very scrappy and physical. It can be unsettling,” Banman noted. “When the officiating allows for that style of play, it certainly plays into their hands.”
Rangely was able to race to a 12-4 first quarter lead and the Mustangs were forced to play catch up the rest of the game. West Grand was able to cut the lead to three points on two different occasions, once in the second quarter and then again in the third quarter. It just wasn’t to be on this day in Rangely, however, and the Mustangs saw their three-game winning streak ended.
Brook Cecil led the team in scoring with 12 points, while Rose Hargadine scored six points, Renea Ellison chipped in with four points and Rebecca Roller had three points.
For Hargadine, Ellison and Roller, it was the final basketball of their high school careers.
“The effort of these three this year has been absolutely outstanding. Their leadership has been invaluable in helping to make this an outstanding year,” Banman said. “I will miss seeing them play, they are great players and even better people.”
The Mustangs ended the season with an overall record of 12-7 and a fifth-place finish in the Western Slope League.
