Kristen Lodge: Fusing Indoor Riding with Outdoor Riding

Are you looking to get fit or stay fit over the winter? Are you dreading the snow and cold temperatures since you love biking outside? Here is an indoor cycling solution.
Jackie Wright of Never Summer Fitness, Grand Lake, is offering a 12-week indoor cycling program designed to enable outdoor riders to train indoors, and learn to apply these skills to outdoor riding. This program will get cyclist leaner, stronger, and ready to bike outdoors in the spring without missing a fitness beat.
The Cycling Fusion Winter Training Series is being offered in Wright’s fitness studio in Grand Lake 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday morning for 12 consecutive weeks. Starting Jan. 7 in her studio, a live broadcast will stream on a 120-inch screen from Pittsburgh. Coaches in the Pittsburgh studio will talk riders through a virtual ride while discuss cadence and other cycling techniques and strategies. Other aspects of the four-hour program include classroom work featuring topics on nutrition, preventing injuries, proper fueling, recovery, and endurance testing. There is also a yoga and pilates component during each session that will focus on core strength, stretching, alignment, and “planks are our friends.”
The training series is four hours of off-and-on bike instruction, and each week is progressive. “Cycling Fusion is a comprehensive 12-week program emphasizing physical fitness and cycling strategy. Plus, it can be translated to other sports,” Wright said. Each participant will track their progress with the Coach’s Assistant, a web-based software program. Additionally, participants will track each ride in a ride journal and post completed tests such as VO2max and heart rate max in order to create a complete record of training and progress for the 12 weeks.
Scott Munn, a Grand Lake-area resident, has been a client of Wright’s since she opened her studio five years ago. He has signed up for the program as a way to get structured training on the weekends. “I like to be coached, and I find that I get better results that way.” As a former Olympic rower and world champion who has traveled the world as an athlete, he feels lucky to have such an elite level fitness trainer in Grand Lake. “I’ve been an athlete for so long, and I’ve always needed a structured training routine. Jackie’s programs fit into my personal goals to be healthier.”
Gene Nacey and Tom Scotto, who own Cycling Fusion in Pittsburgh, designed this Winter Training program. They are expert cyclists and coaches. The program will be streamed live to Never Summer Fitness every Saturday, and to others fitness studios and clubs around the U.S. Never Summer Fitness is the only Colorado studio.
Participants who miss a class can make special arrangements with Wright for replaying the broadcast in her studio. In addition to the 12 classes, Wright is also offering participants two in-studio classes at Never Summer Fitness. There are a few spots still available.
The fitness professional herself, Wright, will also be taking part in the class among her clients.
“You are in for a life-altering fitness journey,” Wright said about this program. “If you are a serious outdoor rider, triathlete and yes, even a marathoner, upon completion of this program you will ride and run better than you ever have before.”
