Middle Park Nordic team wins at Cordillera

The high school Nordic ski team raced at Cordillera Resort near Edwards on Saturday, Jan. 31. The weather was miserable with constant wet snow that made the race course slick, waxing difficult, and the tracks non-existent.
Still, the boys had a great team effort winning the meet out of 13 teams. Daniel Kopp had a strong showing placing 3rd with a time of 16:18 in the 5K classic race. Ian Carver was 5th at 16:23, followed by Elliot Shaw at 16:31 in 7th. Rounding out the team was Logan Miyauchi skiing "under the weather" in 16th, Mark Simmons, 19th, Kyle Ciccarelli, 26th, Alex Law, 39th, Kipp Dearduff, 48th,Andre Law, 50th, Liam Fuqua, 51st, Jensen Hill, 56th, and Jake Kacik, 59th. Kyle has now qualified for state finals in classic.
Girls finish 6th
The girls also had a strong showing placing 6th out of 12 teams. Sierra Smith was the Panther's top finisher in 24th place with a time of 22:32. Emily Jensen was 25th at 22:41, Rowen Gallagher 26th at 22:42, and Mackenzie Deplata 30th at 23:13. Sarah McClain and Allysa Petersen followed closely at 42nd and 44th place respectively.
Raelee Granger was injured in a crash and was not able to finish Emily and Mackenzie have now qualified for state championships.
The team will travel to Frisco Nordic Center on Saturday, Feb. 7, for its last regular season meet. State Championships will be Feb. 19 and 20, also in Frisco. Presently the Panthers will be sending 13 skiers.
