Middle Park’s Mike Schmidt named League Senior of the Year

Granby, Colorado ” Middle Park High School’s Mike Schmidt has been selected Flat Iron League linebacker senior of the year.
He credits his teammates and linemen for helping him achieve the award.
“I just want to say thinks to the linemen and the scout teams and everyone who worked hard to make me better,” said the son of Troy and Katherine of Tabernash.
Schmidt, 17, said he found out about the honor at his football team’s sports banquet last week.
“I was really, really surprised,” he said. “I didn’t really see it coming.”
Places he might continue his football career include Chadron State College in Nebraska or the University of Northern Colorado.
One of his favorite football memories was the Panthers’ upset Bishop Machebeuf during Homecoming.
“(That’s) probably something I’ll remember the rest of my life,” he said. “It was just a really close game and a lot of fun.”
Marlo Klassen, Middle Park High School assistant principal and athletic director, is also proud of Schmidt.
“That’s a great honor,” he said. “That’s the top honor of all of the honors that football players get.”
The Colorado High School Activities Association gave him the award.
The football players who were named first team all state included seniors Justin Cisneros, a linebacker; Schmidt, a quarterback and linebacker; and Mitchell Sprague, a center.
Those awarded second team all state are: senior Zane Bickler, a running back and linebacker; senior Mitch Strang, offensive guard; and junior Jordan Reynolds, a defensive back.
Players who were awarded honorable mention are: junior Charlie Miller, offensive tackle; Sprague, also as a defensive lineman; and senior Joey Visconti, an outside linebacker.
