A police escort ushered the Middle Park Nordic and Alpine teams out of Granby this past Wednesday en route to Summit County for the Nordic and Alpine state championships.

The Nordic championships were held Thursday and Friday at the new Adventure Park in the Frisco Nordic Center complex.

On Thursday, the Skate Championship 5K skate took place.

MPHS girls finished in 10th place. Sierra Smith was the top Panther racer in 30th at 20:03. Emily Jensen followed her in 55th at 21:46. Darby Howard rounded out the team in 56th at 21:50.

The boys finished in 6th. Theo Loo placed 14th at 15:56. He was followed by Logan Miyauchi, 19th at 16:14. Elliot Shaw was next at 16:39 in 24th. Daniel Kopp was 26th at 17 minutes. Mark Simmons, 36th at 17:37. Kyle Ciccarelli was 44th at 18 minutes. Ian Carver was 46th at 18:33. Liam Fuqua was 54th at 18:33. Chris Ciccarelli rounded out the team in 55th at 18:36.

On Friday, the State Championship 5k classic races were held.

The girls team finished 7th overall. They included three freshmen, one sophomore, and one junior.

Emily Jensen was the Panthers’ top finisher in 29th at 27:33. She was closely followed by Rowen Gallagher in 33rd at 27:37. Sierra Smith was next in 37th at 28:38. Darby Howard was next in 41st at 28:59. Mackenzie Deplata rounded out the team in 51st at 35:13.

The boys finished 4th overall. Theo Loo was again MPHS’ top racer with an impressive 6th place at 15:56. Daniel Kopp was next in 14th at 21:32. Logan Miyauchi, 20th at 22:35. Mark Simmons, 23rd at 22:48. Ian Carver, 24th at 22:52. Elliot Shaw 28th at 23 minutes. Liam Fuqua 46th at 24:44. And Kyle Ciccarelli rounded out the Panthers in 49th at 24:59

The MPHS boys classic team won 2nd in the league award. This was a compilation of all the season’s classic ski races. It’s quite an accomplishment when one takes into account the Panthers were ahead of powerhouses Summit County and Battle Mountain. They were beaten only by Aspen, who will send all their boys to junior nationals.

Thanks to the team and parents for a great season.
