Robinson: Special Olympics are in our community
December 24, 2015
We have all heard of it but what is Special Olympics?
"Using sports as a catalyst and programming around health and education, Special Olympics is fighting inactivity, injustice and intolerance. As a result, people with intellectual disabilities become accepted and valued members of their communities, which leads to a more respectful and inclusive society for all. Special Olympics is the largest sports organization in the world serving over 4.2 million people with intellectual disabilities worldwide," according to their website.
At the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) located at Winter Park Resort we offer the opportunity to participate in the ski and snowboarding Special Olympics program. This is a great way to socialize and meet new friends in a fun environment. It is not too late to be an athlete or volunteer for the 2016 season! Practice and competition dates for the upcoming season are: January 9, 23, 30. February 6, 8,20,28.
Practices are held Winter Park Resort and competitions will be held at Eldora and Copper Mountain.
Briana Helling will be coordinating our Special Olympics group this year. Briana is from Richfield, Minn. She came to the NSCD as a member of the 2013 AmeriCorps Team. She is now a second year instructor and excited for a great season with our athletes.
In the future, NSCD is hoping to be able to recruit athletes to form both track and field and swim teams. Participating in Special Olympics is a wonderful opportunity for communities to come together through recreational sports and the spirit of fun.
