Middle Park’s Brian Macchione began his quest for a second-straight state title with a pin (2:42) of Joe Carwin of Brush in the opening round of the Colorado State High School Wrestling Tournament on Thursday at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Macchione (40-0) will face Logan Longworth (35-9) of Weld Central in the quarterfinals on Friday morning.
Middle Park’s Adam Visconti also won his opening round match at 120 pounds with a 4-1 decision over Jake Yslas of Florence. Visconti (31-11) will face Anthony Contreraz (27-15) of Sheridan in the quarterfinals on Friday morning.
West Grand’s Daniel Terwilliger was pinned (2:50) in his first round bout against Aris Shino of Merino at 120 pounds in class 2A. Terwilliger (16-18) will take on Michael Hoops (22-18) of Del Norte in the first round of consolation matches on Friday.
Marina Koepke was the top finisher for Middle Park in today’s girls giant slalom race at Beaver Creek placing 16th (2:10.98). Rebecca Bolen finished 22nd (2:14.38); Natasha Stenicka was 24th ((2:15.80); Kelsey Fagan was 33rd (2:19.70); Brenna Barnes finished 44th (2:26.12); and Lauren Rimmer did not finish. As a team the Middle Park girls finished in sixth place.
Cody Charland was the top finisher for the Middle Park boys in the giant slalom. Charland placed 26th (2:12.61); Aaron Barker finished 56th (2:44.77); and Zack Schult did not finish. As a team the Middle Park boys placed 11th.
Seraphina Smith was the top finisher for Middle Park in today’s girls 5km skate race at Maloit Park in Minturn. Smith finished in ninth place (16:31.8); Linnea Zink finished 16th (17:40.6); Amelia Clancy placed 34th (19:12.3); Elly Zietz was 40th (19:48.0); Kaylene Loo finished 42nd (20:05.0). As a team the Middle Park girls took fifth place with 138 points.
Taber Miyauchi was the top finisher for Middle Park in the boys 5km skate race placing 19th (15:23.3). Steve Simmons finished 25th (15:40.6); Cole Conger was 28th (15:53.0); Daniel Kopp placed 33rd (16:10.0); Joe Rupp was 39th (16:14.3). As a team the Middle Park boys took fifth place with 139 points.
The Colorado State High School Ski Championships conclude on Friday with the alpine teams competing in slalom at Beaver Creek and the Nordic teams competing in the classic race at Maloit Park in Minturn.
Middle Park opened the Frontier League district tournament with a 42-22 win over Bruce Randolph on Thursday evening in Granby. The Lady Panthers are the third seed in the tournament and will host sixth-seeded The Academy at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Granby.
The Middle Park boys earned the second seed in the Frontier League district tournament and will host seventh-seeded The Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in Granby.
