Winter Park adds Freeskiing Open to events lineup
March 10, 2009
Winter Park Resort will host a new freeskiing competition, the Winter Park Freeskiing Open, scheduled for March 21-22.
One hundred of the region’s top freeskiers will compete for $6,500 in cash prizes during the event at Winter Park Resort’s Dark Territory terrain park.
This slopestyle, open class event is limited to the first 100 athletes who register. Walk-in, early bird registration began March 1 for 15 slots. The remaining 85 slots became available online after 5 p.m. on March 1.
Registration is $100 and includes an event day lift ticket or $75 for competition only. Discounted tickets will be available for $37 for training day, scheduled for March 20.
The Winter Park Freeskiing Open’s slopestyle event format will be based on an overall impression by a four-judge panel. An athlete’s best one out of two runs on the course’s six-feature layout will determine who qualifies for finals. The top 10 men and five women will advance to the finals the following day and have the chance to compete for the cash prize. The finals on March 22 will be a big-air style competition, with the winner determined by the highest combined score of five different tricks on a single jump.
Bob Holme, Terrain Park and Youth Marketing manager at Winter Park Resort, said that “due to a lack of competitive opportunities for freeskiing athletes this season, we decided that this would be a great addition to our events calendar. We feel that this unique format will provide competitors with some increased exposure through a live finals Webcast and competitive experience for amateurs and pros alike.
“We have leveled the playing field by giving everyone the same chance to enter and compete for a spot in the finals. This could be someone’s opportunity to break into the scene and compete amongst the best.”
