Alpine Aerials Gymnastics girls rock at statewide competition

Special to the Sky-Hi News

Last week at Ponderosa High School in Parker, nine Grand County gymnasts participated in the CARA Gymnastics State Competition.

In order to even make it to this competition the girls had to qualify. Each level from compulsory 3 to optional 5 has scores that each gymnast must acquire in order to make it to the regional meet. Once at regionals they must place in the top six either on one or all of the following four events: vault, balance beam, uneven parallel bars and floor exercise.

Some gymnasts made it in only one or two events, while others placed in the top six in the all around category, which is cumulative scores on all four events.

Alpine Aerials Gymnastics qualified all 23 gymnasts for the regional competition. Ten gymnasts qualified for State, and five girls came home with State medals.

The competition was extremely tough with over 26 teams participating. The State Competition pits the best CARA gymnasts in our state against each other.

Each level is split by age, so for example, all 7-year-olds in compulsory level 3 compete together.

Those Girls receiving accolades for their efforts are:

Emma Lence, 7: Compulsory level 3, 2nd on vault, 5th on floor exercise, and 5th all around;

Olivia Maurais, 8: Compulsory level 3, 6th place on bars, 2nd place on balance beam, 3rd place on floor exercise, and 3rd place all around.

In the optional Level 1 program: Ashtyn Laraby: 2nd place on vault, Sofia Olsson: 3rd place on vault and 6th place on floor exercise

In the optional Level 3 program: Katrina Quinn: 2nd place on vault
