Sebastian Brower, an 8th grader skiing for the East Grand Middle School Nordic Team, took first place overall in a demanding 3-K cross-country skiing race in Leadville last Saturday, Feb. 13.

Skiing in the freestyle (skating) technique, Brower covered the hilly and rock-hard course in 9 minutes. He was 23 seconds ahead of the next skier. A total of 63 skiers from across the state competed in the event.

For the girls, Maggie Barker was the first skier for East Grand. She took 17th place overall and covered the course in 12 minutes and 41 seconds. A total of 45 girls competed in the race.

Other skiers for the East Grand boys middle school team were, in order of finish: Ethan Callarman (18th overall, 2nd for East Grand), Ethan Ruttenberg (19th overall, 3rd for East Grand), Guy Granger (28th overall, 4th for East Grand) and Will Khuns (45th overall and 5th for East Grand).

Other skiers for the girls were Granby Elementary School skier Sylvia Brower (19th overall), Maddi Ruttenberg (22nd overall, 2nd for East Grand) and Annie Khuns (43rd overall, 3rd for East Grand).

The Leadville race was an optional race for the East Grand Middle School skiers so they drove to the race on their own but still competed as a team.
