Camping discouraged near Vasquez Creek due to bears

Sky-Hi News Staff Report

Please don’t camp in the Vasquez Creek area — that’s the message officials from the U.S. Forest Service Sulphur Ranger District want to get out this week.

Forest Service officials issued a warning to potential campers this week to strongly discourage camping in the Vasquez Creek region of Arapaho National Forest just outside of Winter Park. Increased bear activity in the drainage and a recent shooting that resulted in the death of a bear cub prompted the safety concerns.

Forest Service representatives highlighted two other prominent camping sites near Winter Park that are still open for the season and offer bear-proof food and trash amenities: Idlewild Campground and St. Louis Creek Campground.

Idlewild Campground is located on the east side of Highway 40 south of Winter Park and is open through Sept. 20. The St. Louis Creek Campground is located in the Fraser Experimental Forest on County Road 73 and is open later into the season to accommodate big game hunters.
