Snow Mountain Ranch will host the second race of the Colorado High School Cycling League 2011 race series on Sunday, Oct. 2. As many as 30 high school teams from across the state of Colorado and southern Wyoming will be riding the trails starting at 10 a.m.

Since there is no local team, independent riders can contact Kate Rau to register (kate@coloradomtb.org). Cost is about $50. Volunteers are needed to set up the venue and mark the course on Saturday Oct 1. On Sunday, see the action up close, sweep a field of riders or be a course marshal. Volunteer opportunities, pre-ride times and race information can be found online at http://www.coloradomtb.org. All participants are encouraged to pre-ride the course.

This is a new event for the Fraser Valley but promises many exciting moments watching more than 200 high school students from Colorado and southern Wyoming racing their mountain bikes.

Construction on the Broome Hut on Second Creek is coming to a close as snow moves into the high country. But some work still remains in Fraser. If you can volunteer time to help wrap things up, e-mail marilyn.anderson@q.com or signup online at http://www.grandhuts.org. Contact Andy at 970-726-4099. Many thanks to those who have offered their help this summer. The amazing accomplishments could not have happened without you.

National Public Lands Day was a complete success last Saturday in that every project was completed this year with staggering accomplishments. Thanks to the many people who donated their time to plan and prepare the projects, the businesses and individuals who donated funding, materials, raffle prizes and food to the event, and most of all to the volunteers who shared a glorious day in the woods and gave back to their public lands. To all, we give our heartfelt gratitude for a job well done.

The project was headed by BJ Duffy of the U.S. Forest Service and Maura McKnight of Headwaters Trails Alliance and a small committee of dedicated representatives from government agencies, local trails groups and individuals, several of whom have been working together for all 17 years.
