Events pay off for the Nordic ‘everyday skier’
Grand Nordic Corner
Last weekend the Winter Park Birthday Bash featuring the Stagecoach Classic was a home run. More entities were involved with setup than ever before. Participation by both locals and visitors was an all time high. And all had a great time with the fabulous cooperation and premier weather and snow conditions.
The Winter Park & Fraser Chamber combined its Winter Park Carnival with the Mary Jane Birthday Bash and the Devil’s Thumb Ranch-Winter Park Stagecoach Classic, as well as many different sponsors, to make the biggest party of the season. It was well advertised as a cooperative effort, which only built more interest and participation. It was well done on all counts and hats off to each part of the whole.
There is even talk of combining the Stagecoach Classic with the upcoming Ranch2Ranch Trek in a series for next year. Again, working together can only be great for the Valley. No one else has such a series for noncompetitive Nordic skiing. It’s for the everyday skier and there are so many of us out there. So come join us to explore more of Grand County. Saturday Feb 8, Grand Nordic presents the Ranch2Ranch XC Ski Trek from Ski Granby Ranch to the YMCA Nordic Center. See the related article on page 11 for complete details.
Heavy snows (with more in the forecast) will make the high country both an incredible wonderland and a potentially dangerous place to be. Please go prepared with extra food, water and clothing, avoid avalanche prone areas, and travel with others. At the very least, tell someone where you are going.
The Nordic areas are operating full tilt with all trails groomed, if they can keep up with the wind and new snow. Come out and see nature at it’s best! And above all, have fun!
