Fraser Valley How Energized Are You?

Fraser, Colorado We are energetic creatures, not just in the eyes of alternative medicine practitioners, but to every scientist that has studied chemistry, biology, and physics (and hopefully to you too after this article).Every internal physiologic process has energetic components. Brain activity is measured through an EEG (electroencephalogram), heart activity is monitored through an EKG (electrocardiogram), and muscle activity is measured through an EMG (electromyelogram). These are different scientific measures for energy in our body. This energy or life force creates bioelectrical fields that can alter magnetic fields around the body. All of our biorythyms including pulse, breath, muscle contraction, even cell vibration, create oscillating electrical fields that connect our body as a coordinated system. Our body’s processes are regulated by hormones, neurotransmitters, and this life force. The physical connection is termed our living matrix. From a cellular level, the DNA in each cell is connected through the cell’s internal fiber matrix, to our extracellular collagen matrix, to all of our organs, muscles, bones and tissues. This living matrix responds to mechanical, vibrational, and energetic stimuli. Disease and disorder alter this flow of our life force through our living matrix. The magnetic fields we thus create as a living person span into the space around our bodies, connecting our external world to our internal processes. So how does physical therapy affect energy flow? As clinicians, we aim to train a patient’s movement patterns. We practice mindful movement patterns in order to destroy faulty movement patterns and restore efficient functional movement.Mindful practice trains our brain to signal our muscles to create movement. This neurologic activation empowers our brain magnetism. This magnetism flows directly into our body through our blood supply impacting the entirety of our living matrix. Energy flow strengthens our cellular connectivity, strengthening and stabilizing our neuromuscular patterns. Physical therapy also focuses on our structural alignment. When we are well aligned, our living matrix is well connected. When we are poorly aligned, our neurologic firing, vascular, and connective tissue systems are compromised. Energy flow is disrupted thus affecting the functioning of all our physiologic processes including digestive, respiratory, and emotional. For instance, as our spine is lengthened, our structure allows for deeper, more efficient breathing and greater oxygenation of tissue. Good posture has this direct connection to our cardiovascular system, digestive system, neuromuscular system, mood and the like. Thus, the better our body alignment, the more energy flow contributes to health. Our physical structure works as an efficient system when we are well aligned. Our connective tissue matrix creates a vibratory continuum which allows forces to be absorbed, converted, and distributed. The bones are the compressive elements while the tendons and ligaments are tensile. In good alignment, this structure is flexible and balanced, with strong energetic communication. This decreases the potential for injury. The primary conductors of energy are our muscles, connective tissue and blood vessels; hence a misaligned joint disrupts this energy flow altering physiological processes. Promotion of healing is also a component of mindful movement practice, creating strength, length and control through efficient movement. Our response in healing is affected by the ability for our energy system to trigger the activity of the cells that produce fibers to heal. An electric force generates magnetic fields when tissue is compressed or tensioned. This force promotes cells to migrate and differentiate to lay down new tissue for repair. This electric force is responsible for healthy bones and connective tissues. Also, the outer covering of our nerves which extend to every part of the body, conducts a slow DC current that induces generative cells to differentiate and lay down tissue for repair. Lastly, the use of intention and touch through physical therapies forges a stronger life force. A therapist’s good intentions to heal promote energy flow from the therapist to the patient. Manual therapy not only transfers energy from the patient to the client, but also creates mechanical and thermal forces transduced through the body. Therefore, your therapist’s hands as well as his/her brain and heart truly help you heal. Now close your eyes and focus, can you feel the energy?
