Free backcountry survival class offered in Fraser on Jan. 21
A four-hour backcountry survival class will be taught by Dave Batura from Grand County Search and Rescue (GCSAR) at the Road and Bridge building off County Road 5 in Fraser on Jan. 21.
Discussion topics will include The Ten Essentials, what good clothing is, how to read a map and compass, an overview of how to use a GPS, how to start a fire, how to dig a snow pit and survive, and how to survive an unexpected night out.
The class is free and open to the public.
Batura is a Colorado native and a retired Colorado State Patrol trooper. He has been a member of Grand County Search and Rescue for seven years and is currently the Incident Commander. He has taught backcountry survival to several search and rescue teams in the state including law enforcement and backcountry response teams. He is also a tracker for GCSAR.
