Sky-Hi Daily News
Middle Park High’s boys basketball team is charging into their first competition of the season.
The Panther hoopsters are playing their season-opening games at the Meeker Invitational. The tournament opened Thursday and continues through Saturday.
“We’re entering this new season with a very athletic team,” said coach Brian Reynolds. “We’ll be doing a lot of full-court presses to create turnovers so that we can get the ball and make layups. Offensively, we will be a fast-breaking team that will be able to score a bunch.”
Middle Park’s 2008-09 team is one of the largest in recent years with 31 players on its roster, including:
Varsity ” Jordan Reynolds, Justin Cisneros, Jared Rojo, Ross Eaton, Mantas Raila, Walter Shoup, Josh Van Natta, Mike Schmidt, Sam Damon, Zane Bickler and David Diamond
Junior varsity ” Adam Weaver, Cort Brennan, Colby Marr, Connor Dolan, Matt Rizley, Tyler Orr, Sam Little, Marc Schmidt, Martynas Ramazauskas and Jerah Carter
C-Squad ” Scott Malley, Oakley Ellis, Colton Kissler, Connor Spencer, Rytis Raila, Parker Hale, Connor Hardman, Sarunas Juodagalvis and Kale Henderson.
“Last season was my first as head coach and we won seven games, which was good,” Reynolds said. “But all of those wins were over teams from smaller divisions.
Our objective this season is to annihilate all the 2A teams we meet, beat most of the 3A teams and compete strongly with the 4A so that they’ll remember who Middle Park is.”
Reynolds said much of the varsity team’s success will depend upon its seven returning seniors ” Jordan Reynolds, Justin Cisneros, Mike Schmidt, Sam Damon and Zane Bickler.
“We have plenty of depth this year,” he said. “Starting out this season, our challenge is that we lost our two leading scorers last spring. We’re looking for this year’s players to step up and be their replacements.”
