Granby " Middle Park spikers hit rough patch during tournament

Last Saturday’s Fort Morgan Classic had its ups and downs, but mostly downs for Middle Park High’s volleyballers.
The Lady Panthers struggled for much of the day. By the end, they had won one of the four matches they played during that annual tournament.
Middle Park lost its first match to the host Fort Morgan team in two games 19-25 and 22-25 before falling in the second match to Akron by scores of 22-25 and 19-25. It was the same story in the third match with Middle Park losing again in two games to Strausberg by scores of 20-25 and 18-25.
In the tournament’s fourth and final match, the Lady Panthers rallied. Taking on Estes Park, they won the first game 25-21, lost the second 20-25 and secured the match win in the third game with a dominating score of 15-8.
Coach Kris Newberry admitted the Fort Morgan Classic was a frustrating outing for the team.
“In every one of those games we lost, we’d start by marching up the score in our favor and then seeing the other team come back to march up the score on us to win it,” she said.
Newberry put much of the blame for the losses on a high volume of serving errors.
“We were plagued by too many serving errors, which just gave it away,” she said. “We also lacked a killer instinct to close out the games that we were leading in. We’re now working hard on improving both those things.”
While Saturday’s tournament had its disappointments, it also had its highlights for the Lady Panthers including Elsa Krieg making 72 hits with 50 percent of them as kills while committing only three errors.
Shannan Stensvad also earned some good stats with 32 percent of her hits as kills. She was followed by Anna Conrad with 27 percent and Quincey Pedersen with 25 percent.
Krieg also led the team in digs with 28 for the tournament. Conrad and Chelsea Lang posted 22 apiece.
Krieg and Lang earned five blocks each Saturday while Pedersen and Cheyenne Hickox made four apiece.
Lady Panther setter Madison Zolnir made 40 assists during the tournament.
“We had some real good moments where we played fundamentally good volleyball,” Newberry said. “But we kind of served ourselves out of the games.”
