Granby " Middle Park track team battles at Brighton Relays

Still short some of its key athletes due to illness, injury or other athletic commitments, Middle Park High’s track and field team opened its season at the Brighton Relays last Saturday, March 8.

The Panthers were the only 3A division team competing at the relays.

With only seven athletes, Middle Park’s girls finished ninth out of 13 in a field of all 4A and 5A schools.

The Panther boys had only 11 athletes at Saturday’s competition. They finished 12th out of 14 teams in the field of all 4A and 5A schools.

Girls results

Fifth place was taken by Panther team in the distance medley with a time of 16:36.58. Jessica Gleisberg raced the 800-meter leg, followed by Amanda Lange sprinting 400 meters. Taking the baton next was Kelly Little, who ran for 1,200 meters before handing it off to Hannah Garcia, who raced the final 1,600 meters to the finish line.

With a one-person team, Middle Park took a fifth place in the pole vault relay.

Jacqueline Thomas went over the bar at 8 feet, 6 inches.

In the 800 meter relay, the Panther team of Amanda Lange, Melissa Plum, Lihla Clancy and Kelly Little took seventh place with a time of 2:07.85.

Another seventh place was earned in the 1,600 meter medley with a time of 5:44.19. It began with back-to-back 200 meter sprints by Amanda Lange and Melissa Plum, followed by Jessica Gleisberg and Hannah Garcia running the final 400 and 800 meter distances.

An eighth-place finish was made in the 1,600 meter relay with a time of 5:21.92 by the team of Melissa Plum, Lihla Clancy, Kelly Little and Hannah Garcia.

Boys results

The Panther boys top finish was a fifth place in the pole vault relay with another team of one as Patrick Hutchings went over the bar at 8 feet even.

A sixth-place finish was taken by Middle Park’s team of Mark Schmidt, Ben Shipman, Mike Schmidt and Zach Peterson in the 800 meter relay after they sprinted around the track to finish in a time of 1:43.80.

In the 1,600 meter relay, the team of Zach Peterson, Mike Schmidt, Conner Nicklas and Ben Shipman ran to a seventh-place finish in 4:08.13.

An eighth place was taken in the shot put relay by Josh VanNatta, Vinny Crippen, Charlie Miller and Mike Schmidt, who posted a combined distance of 101 feet, 9 inches.
