Granby spiker competes with national team

Elsa Krieg of Granby will be competing in the 2008 USA Junior National Volleyball Championships in Dallas, Texas, from June 30 to July 3.

Krieg is going to the national championships as a member of the Colorado Juniors, a volleyball club based in Monument. Her 12-member team, coached by Judy Peer, qualified for the trip to Dallas by winning the No. 1 spot in the state.

During the four-day tournament in Texas, the Colorado Juniors will be competing in the 48-team National Division. Only the top 1 percent of club volleyball teams across the nation qualify for USA Junior National Volleyball Championships.

In preparation for the trip to Dallas, the Colorado Juniors spent Wednesday and Thursday, June 18-19, in Granby. They held practice sessions in the gym of East Grand Middle School.

The other players on the Colorado Juniors team are from south Denver, Monument and Colorado Springs. The team has been training and competing together since November. Its players are all age 15 and under.

Elsa is the daughter of Mark and Jenny Krieg of Granby. She is also a member of the Lady Panther volleyball team at Middle Park High School in Granby.
