Grand County " Ladies and gentlemen, start your augers: Ice fishing contest imminent

It’s only a week away from one of the biggest events of the winter in Grand County ” the 20th Annual Three Lakes Ice Fishing Contest.

Hundreds of ice anglers of all ages are expected to compete in the 2008 Three Lakes Ice Fishing Contest scheduled for Friday through Sunday, Feb. 1-3. Once again, the contest is being run by the Granby Area Chamber of Commerce.

The contest us being held on the frozen waters of Lake Granby, Granby Pump Canal, Shadow Mountain Lake, Grand Lake and up to 500 yards downstream from the Shadow Mountain Dam on the Colorado River.

More than $50,000 in cash and prizes will be won that weekend. Once again, all eyes will be on the famous Three Lakes Raffle Contest whose grand prize is a Ford Ranger pickup valued at $21,835. The second prize is a snowmobile valued at $5,000 while the third-place prize is a $5,000 ATV.

Its other raffle prizes are: fourth place, fish finder valued at $440; fifth place, underwater camera valued at $400; sixth place, ice hut valued at $330; seventh place, power auger valued at $350; eight place, DNA jacket valued at $45; ninth place, DNA jacket valued at $45; and 10th place, ice rod combo valued at $30.

Cash will also be won during the three-day contest in its Big Fish competition.

Fishermen and women bringing in the biggest fish in the mackinaw, brown trout, rainbow trout and Grand Slam categories will win cash prizes.

First-place winners in the Big Fish Contest will be awarded $1,000 while second place gets $500 and third place $250. Fourth through 10 place finishers will receive prizes ranging from $175 to $50. To be a Grand Slam winner, contestants must catch one qualifying fish in the mackinaw, rainbow trout, brown trout and Kokanee salmon categories.

The kids can also compete during next week’s contest in its Youth Division. A number of gift certificate prizes are offered to those catching the biggest fish.

The Feb. 1-3 contest is sponsored by Mavericks Grill, Mountain Parks Electric, Sportsman’s Warehouse and several other local businesses.

To join in the fun and excitement, register at the Granby Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center, Budget Tackle in Granby or at Beacon Landing Marina just down the road from the Pump Plant on County Road 64.

The registration fee is $30. It not only enters a participant into the fishing contest but also makes them eligible to win in the raffle contest. Kids are free, but must register to be eligible for the Youth Division prizes.
