Grand County Nordic skiers fare well in Snow Mountain Ranch Stampede

The 27th Annual Stampede was held Saturday, March 6, at Snow Mountain Ranch. After an early morning scare with the closing of Berthoud Pass until 8 a.m. and last minute decisions about waxing, racers were ready to take on the course.

As the skies cleared and the temperature began to rise, a few spots on the race course became soft in the heat of the sun. Groomers worked hard all morning to clean up these trouble spots. Overall, the classic tracks held up and the trails were in good condition for the race.

The final obstacle that appeared through the morning was a pair of moose on the loose that decided to camp out near Biathlon, right along the planned race course.

After the 24 participants in the 2k kids race crossed their finish line, the 42k and 21k classic race took off across the valley, followed shortly by the skate race and the 10k freestyle. Onlookers occupied themselves at the barbecue while they waited for their favorite racers to make it through the course. At the awards ceremony, overall and age category winners were awarded with a variety of prizes from Swix, Toko, Madshus, Salomon and Rossignol.
