Grand Lake Ice Fishing Contest results from March 3 to 4

GRAND LAKE – Despite the brutally cold winds during the Grand Lake Fishing Contest, as many as 222 die-hard anglers took to the ice during the two-day event.

“For our first year, that’s a pretty good turnout,” said Jim Gassner, contest organizer and owner of Rocky Mountain Outfitters, Grand Lake.

Gassner commended the winners for sticking it out despite a somewhat slow day of fishing on the lake, perhaps due to the poor weather.

Yet some rather large fish were caught, even non-qualifiers under the Colorado Fish and Wildlife’s range of eligible contest fish on Grand Lake. The largest, according to Gassner, was one 35 inches long with a girth of 18 inches, but fish between 26 and 36 inches are not qualifiers on Grand Lake per state regulation to protect the age group.

No fish were killed during this first-ever catch and release contest on Grand Lake.

To gain a better understanding of the fish populations in Grand Lake, during the contest, fish caught were tagged to keep track of future catches and recaptures.
