Grand Lake Touring Center opens with more than 80 percent of terrain available

Grand Nordic Corner / Diana Lynn Rau
Grand County, CO Colorado

Grand Lake Touring Center sits on over 500 acres below Rocky Mountain National Park and next to the Colorado River. It feels like the river flows through your soul as you stand looking down on the Colorado flowing under one of the two new bridges built by the touring center. The other bridge takes you over the Red Top Valley Ditch. The winding River Trail is delightful to ski, very user friendly. The new piston bully adds that touch of perfection to good snow that makes for a perfectly groomed trail system.

The lodge was remodeled last year and new rental ski equipment purchased. The addition of new trails, including some single track used in summer for mountain biking, hiking, and Fido of course, have really given the place a facelift, offering something for everyone. It just feels good as trails wind in and out of the Rec District property to the neighboring private land where owners have allowed ski access for over 30 years greatly expanding the terrain.

Enjoy soup, chili and libations while relaxing in front of a warm cozy fire in the newly renovated lodge. Play inside game boards, not just for kids. The tubing hill visible from the lodge is free and tubes are available or bring your own.

Don’t miss out – the early bird season pass is available until Dec. 10 for $90 but is available to Grand Nordic members for $81. After Dec. 10, the cost goes up to $110. Children can get a season pass for just $20, which is discounted to $15 if purchased with an adult.

Trail fees are $12 daily with only $5 for 16 and under and half day rates available. The rental shop has new rental equipment plus equipment, clothes and other gear and accessories for sale.

The first event of the season is Locals Day, Dec. 5, with free trail passes. Full moon ski nights are offered Dec. 18 and Feb. 18 from 5-9 p.m. They always have a campfire with complimentary hot chocolate and marshmallows but please call ahead for weather conditions. Two for one trail passes are offered Feb. 13-14, Sunday and Monday. Kids lessons will be available but you must call the Nordic Center to sign up – 970-627-8008. More information and dates will be announced here and on the Rec District website http://www.grandlakerecreation.com.

Grand Lake Nordic Fest is Jan. 15 in conjunction with Grand Nordic offering free lessons to everyone. Trail passes and rentals are discounted but are free if you are a Grand Nordic member. Preregistration through the Nordic Center is required if you need rental equipment. Ski demos will be available from several companies as well. Classic and skate lessons beginner through advanced are offered for both adults and kids morning and afternoon.
