Whitewater rafters and kayakers will take on Class V whitewater at Gore Canyon near Kremmling this weekend.

“People come from far and wide,” said race Director Lisa Reeder. “It’s one of the premier stretches in the country and people know about it. It’s a great end of the season event.”

The national competitive whitewater race is open to all boaters. It features the Gore Rapids, a technical classified rapid, and Tunnel Falls, a 12-foot waterfall.

“You need to be a hardcore whitewater enthusiast in order to execute Gore Canyon,” Reeder said. “It’s a real safe day to be on the river … because of all the organized safety and expert paddlers.”

The race was canceled last year because of permit issues. The race will take off where it left off under the direction of Reeder, who pulled the permit this year.

“I have lots of volunteers and lots of help,” she said.

“We hope the whole community comes out, and plays with us in the park,” said Kacey Beres, Kremmling Chamber of Commerce events director.

Crowds expected

Bureau of Land Management officials say they are working closely with the race organizers, Union Pacific Railroad and Grand County in preparation for the Gore Canyon Race.

“We’re reminding everyone to stay off of the railroad tracks and keep their dogs leashed,” said Dave Stout, Kremmling BLM field manager, who notes that Pumphouse Recreation Area will be occupied by high numbers of racers and spectators this weekend.

In addition, the Confluence Road to the put-in for the Gore Canyon run will be closed Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and race organizers are providing a free shuttle between Pumphouse Campground and the Gore Canyon put-in.
