Brook Cecil won the high jump competition in Rifle on April 18, highlighting an excellent team performance for West Grand High School.

A junior, Cecil’s winning jump of 5 feet, 2 inches was one inch over the Colorado Class 2A state qualifying mark of 5-1.

Equally impressive was that five girls combined to score 59 of the team’s 84 meet points in four jumping events. In addition to Cecil, Melissa Kraker’s five-foot high jump was second and Renea Ellison took seventh place in the event.

Danette Billington had a season high 15-7 for second place in the long jump. The Mustang triple jumpers, Erin Beason and Ellison, finished second and fifth in that event while Beason, Cecil and Cheyenne Sims garnered second, third and fourth in the pole vault.

West Grand’s girl’s team finished in second place in the 18-team competition.

Seniors Rick Gamblin and Drew Klotz placed well in their key events to lead the Mustang boy’s team. Gamblin took second in the high jump at 5-8 and was fourth in the pole vault at 11 feet.

Klotz has placed in both hurdle events every meet this season and he continued that trend in Rifle. His 17.3 time in the 110-meter high hurdles was fifth and he later finished seventh in the 300-meter high hurdles. AJ Silva was the only other West Grand boy to place in the meet as he took sixth place in the pole vault.

Freshman/Sophomore Results

On Tuesday, April 21, West Grand High School played host to a three-team freshman/sophomore meet.

“This proved to be a very beneficial experience for our younger athletes,” coach Joe Shield said.

Cheyenne Sims (100-meter and 300-meter hurdles), Travis Gore (high jump and triple jump) and Zach Ahrens (shot put and discus) were all double event winners and all posted season best marks in their events.

Kira Stone was the highest freshman/sophomore placer in the shot put and had a season-best throw in the discus for second place. Maddie Whitten won the long jump, finished second in both hurdle races and was third in the pole vault.

In one of the more exciting and competitive races of the afternoon, Kris Gregory ran a personal best 5:44.2 in the 1600-meter run for second place
