The recent trip to Grand Junction’s Glacier Ice Arena proved to be a rough one for Kremmling’s Bantam B hockey players who suffered back-to-back losses there in two days of competition against two different teams.

In the first game on Saturday, March 8, the Cattle Kings fought hard but lost 7-3 to Telluride’s Bantam B team.

The game began well with Kremmling getting on the scoreboard first in the opening period. After battling for the first 10 minutes, Jack Hange seized the puck, drove past a couple of defenders and slammed it into the net to score an unassisted goal.

The Cattle Kings got to enjoy their lead until the second period when Telluride scored the tying goal after five minutes of play. Keeping the momentum from that goal, Telluride scored once more in the second period and then three more times in the opening minutes of the third period.

After taking such a steady pounding, Kremmling finally got its hockey sticks going again in the middle of the final period. With assists from Cannon Murray and Connor Jennings, the Cattle Kings’ Derrin Weaver got the puck, sliced through the defenders and slapped it past Telluride’s goalie to score.

Energized by that goal, Kremmling wanted another and quickly got it. About a minute later, Travis Potts slammed the puck home to score off an assist from Taber Miyauchi.

Fearful that the resurgent Cattle Kings might steal away what they thought was going to be an easy win, Telluride’s players redoubled their efforts. That shut down Kremmling’s offense and allowed Telluride to score twice more before the game clock ran out.

Kremmling’s goalkeeper Maura Hartley made 27 saves in Saturday’s game.

After a night’s rest, the Cattle Kings returned to ice of the Glacier Ice Arena on Sunday morning. Despite a strong effort, Kremmling’s players could not successfully penetrate Grand Junction’s defense and fell 4-0.

The first period was a defensive battle between the two teams with neither offense being able to find the other team’s net. The break came well past the midway point of the second period when Grand Junction’s offense broke through the Cattle Kings defenders to score.

Worn down by the constant attacks, Kremmling’s defense faltered in the third period with Grand Junction scoring three more times.

The Cattle Kings’ goalie Maura Hartley made 12 saves in Sunday’s game.
