Lady Mustangs begin season with pair of wins

The season started for the Lady Mustangs of West Grand High School with a pair of wins at the West Grand Invitational Tournament this past weekend in Kremmling.

Defensive pressure proved to be the difference in both games as West Grand defeated the junior varsity from Eagle Valley High School, 44-20, and Clear Creek High School, 56-28.

In each contest, the Mustangs played an even first quarter and then built a sizeable advantage during the second and third quarters.

“I was probably the most pleased with the effort put forth on defense,” said Coach Larry Banman. “That has to come from each player and it shows a willingness to work hard.”

Brook Cecil led the team in scoring with 20 points in the first game and 19 in the Saturday morning contest. Against Eagle Valley, Taylor Pesch scored 11 points and Melissa Kraker chipped in with eight points.

Against the Clear Creek Golddiggers, Howell scored 10 points, Pesch had nine and Kraker again contributed with eight points.

Heide, Roller and Chyenne Sims also put in points during the winning effort.

This weekend, the Mustangs travel to Vail Christian on Friday and complete the weekend by hosting South Park on Saturday.

Junior Varsity

The junior varsity for West Grand won all four games it played on Friday and Saturday. The Mustangs defeated C-teams from Eagle Valley and Battle Mountain as well as junior varsity squads from Clear Creek and Soroco.
