GRANBY — The Middle Park Panthers battled the defending 2A state champ Florence Huskies to a scoreless tie until midway through the third quarter on a chilly, blustery Panther Field on Saturday in front of a cheering capacity crowd.

But the Huskies mounted a bruising ground drive on their first second-half possession, edged the ball across the north goal line and never looked back, though Connor Jennings blocked the point-after attempt to leave the score at 6-0.

A quarter later, the Huskies repeated the feat at the south goal line after stopping each Panther possession in the meantime. Once again, Middle Park stopped the point-after attempt, leaving the game at 12-0 in favor of Florence, which turned out to be the final score.

“We definitely overachieved,” Panther Coach Troy Schmidt said of the Panther season ending two games into the state playoffs.

Middle Park overcame adversity all season, suffering multiple injuries to key players, forcing some remaining players to play on both offense and defense for the better part of most games.
