Middle Park’s Nordic team traveled to Eldora Mountain in Nederland this past Thursday and Friday, Feb. 13-14, to compete in the Colorado State High School Championships. Middle Park qualified seven boys. Because no girls qualified, Colorado high school rules allowed three girls to participate.

Day One: Classic

Competitors were greeted with difficult conditions with sideways snow and 65 mile per hour wind gusts. In the girls 5km race Rowen Gallagher finished in 42nd, Macenzie Deplata 45th and Sara McClain in 46th. Overall the Middle Park girls finished tenth out of 11 schools.

The boys finished ninth out of 12 schools in the classic division. The Panthers’ top skier was Steve Simmons finishing in 24th, followed by Logan Miyauchi in 33rd and Daniel Kopp in 38th place.

Day Two: Skate

The girls again finished tenth out of 11 schools. Rowen Gallagher finished 41nd with Sara McClain in 46th.

The boys finished with an impressive sixth place out of 13 schools. Top Panthers skier Steve Simmons was involved in a 10-person pileup at the start and suffered a shoulder injury. He was still able to finish the race with one useful arm coming in third from last. The other skiers turned in strong performances with Logan Miyauchi finishing in 25th, Theo Loo in 28th, Daniel Kopp in 34th, Elliot Shaw in 47th and Mark Simmons in 48th.

Overall first year head coach Travis Fuqua determined it was a successful season as the Panthers had only one senior and many underclassmen.
