The challenging course at CMC Leadville was the site of a 5K skate race for MPHS Nordic on Feb. 13. The day was warm and breezy, but the course was fast. The team had strong times despite numerous skiers crashing coming down steep hills with apt names like “The Boneyard.”
The boys scored a 2nd place team finish with Logan Miyauchi coming in 2nd place in a time of 13:40, followed by Theo Loo in 8th at 14:27, and Elliot Shaw in 16th. Mark Simmons came in 19th, Ian Carver 28th, Sawyer Cousineau 31st, Liam Fuqua 35th, and Kyle Ciccarelli 41st-all qualified for the state race. Wil Cleveland, Andre Law, Isiah Callarman, Alex Law, and Jake Kacik wrapped it up.
Sierra Smith led the Panther Ladies to a 6th place team finish with her 12th place finish in a time of 17:32, followed by Rowen Gallagher in 21st and Emily Jensen in 22nd. Lizzy Barker came in 33rd and Darby Howard 38th, qualifying for state as well. Alyssa Petersen, Sarah McClain, Raelee Granger, Mackenzie Deplata, Katlyn Cimino, Jesse Hoyhta, and Neva Meindl all powered through the course too.
All of the state qualifiers will continue practicing at Snow Mt Ranch in preparation for the state championships in Aspen Feb. 25 and 26.
