Middle Park High’s volleyball team soundly whipped Summit County in the first match of the 2008 season held last Thursday in the gym of East Grand Middle School in Granby.

The Lady Panthers dominated the play from start to finish, winning all three of the games by scores of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-17.

“Summit is usually good competition, but our girls handily defeated that 4A division team in three games,” said Coach Kris Newberry. “For our first outing, we served very strongly with a minimum of errors. We mostly kept our intensity up and held our focus throughout the match. I’m proud of our girls for doing so well in their first varsity competition of the season. This is a good start that will give us momentum into our

In the opening game Thursday, Middle Park quickly shot out to a 10-point lead before Summit knew what was happening and then steadily drove to the 25-13 win. The second game was almost identical with the Lady Panthers easily powering to a 25-14 win.

As the third game opened, Summit’s players earned the first point, which was the first and last time in the match that they held the lead. Middle Park’s players then reasserted themselves and built up an eight-point lead before apparently running out of steam about midway in the game. That lapse allowed Summit to pull to within four points, but the Lady Panthers woke up and regained their momentum to push ahead to the final 25-17 win.

On the way to their victory in the season opener, the Lady Panthers earned some good individual stats, including Anna Conrad and Elsa Krieg leading the team in kills with four apiece. Adding to that were Quincey Pedersen who made three kills and Arielle Steinberg who made two kills from the backrow. Cheyenne Hickox and Chelsea Lang posted one kill each.

Newberry praised Krieg for her defensive work, saying she “owned the net” after she made five blocks during Thursday’s home match. Madison Zolnir made two blocks while Conrad and Hickox contributed one apiece.

Steinberg led the team in digs with seven, followed by Krieg with six, Lang with five, and Conrad and Larissa Burg with one each.

The team’s serving was especially notable for a first match. Conrad led with an outstanding five aces, followed by Burg and Krieg with three apiece. Steinberg and Zolnir hammered in two each.

“Chelsea Lang was also our top service receiver who passed with accuracy which really helped set up our offense,” Newberry said. “This was the varsity debut for Madison Zolnir and she did an awesome job.”

Also winning their match against Summit on Thursday was Middle Park’s C-Squad who won in two games 25-16 and 25-13.

However, the Lady Panther junior varsity was not as lucky. The JVs won their first game 25-19, but then lost the next two by scores of 25-16 and 15-12.
