Panthers compete in Summit cross-country race

Four Panther high-school cross-country skiers have qualified for the state finals in February following their finishes in races last weekend. Steve Simmons was the top boys skier for the Panthers in 14th place at the Gold Run Nordic Center near Breckenridge on Friday, Jan. 10, followed by Logan Myauchi in 28th and Theo Loo in 39th. Daniel Kopp qualified for state finals in skate skiing.
Middle Park boys team placed seventh in the classic 5k race with the girls team placing ninth. There were 12 boys teams participating and 11 girls.
Aspen High School won the boys division, with Summit High School garnering the top spot in the girls division. Other boys finishers were Elliot Shaw, Ian Carver, Mark Simmons, Chris Ciccarelli, Jake Kacik, Andre Law, Liam Fuqua, Kyle Ciccarelli and Alex Law. There were 96 boys skiers in total.
Rowen Gallagher was Middle Park’s top girls classic skier in 43rd place followed by Macenzie Deplata, Sara McClain, and Katja Della-Libera. There were 66 total women’s skiers.
Saturday’s skate race was held at Frisco Nordic Center on Saturday, Jan. 11. It was a warm day with fast, wet snow. Middle Park’s boys placed fifth out of 12 teams with Summit High School winning the meet. The girls team placed 10th out of 11 teams. Summit High School again won the overall.
Steve Simmons was the Panther’s top skate skier in 13th. He was followed by Theo Loo in 29th, Daniel Kopp in 33rd, and Logan Myauchi in 34th. Daniel Kopp has now qualified for state finals. Other finishers were Elliot Shaw, Kipp Dearduff, Mark Simmons, Kyle Ciccarelli, Alex Law, Liam Fuqua, Chris Ciccarelli and Andre Law.
In the girls skate division, Rowen Gallagher led the Panthers in 49th place. She was followed by Sara McClain, Macenzie Deplata and Katja Della-Libera.
Middle Park’s nordic skiers next travel to Aspen on Jan. 18 for both classic and skate competitions.
East Grand Middle School
The East Grand Middle School had a strong first showing at the Summit 3km Classic race on Friday, Jan. 10. Conditions were cold and windy on the mostly unsheltered course at Gold Run Nordic Center. Both the Cub girls and boys team placed 2nd in team results.
