Prep sports recap: West Grand victorious in season opener

West Grand Football kicked off Friday with the varsity team’s first home game, leaving the Mustangs with a solid 43-0 win against the Calhan Bulldogs.

Seniors Luis Dominguez and Hugh Wheatley scored the most points during the inaugural game with both players making a touchdown followed by a successful two-point conversion.

The Mustangs travel to Caliche High School in Iliff on Friday to battle the Buffaloes. The Buffaloes come into the test with a record of 1-0, winning 43-0 in their recent non-league test against Gilpin County.

Middle Park wasn’t as victorious in its season opener at home on Friday, losing the match to Battle Mountain High School from Edwards, 7-14.

The game was highlighted by a total of 181 yards on behalf of Middle Park, with 88 passing and 93 rushing yards.

The Panthers will welcome Estes Park at home on Sept. 7. Estes Park faces its first season game on Friday against Arvada.
