Results from the Snow Mountain Stampede

The 32nd Annual Snow Mountain Stampede had almost 250 racers participating in the two day event March 7 and 8 at the YMCA of the Rockies. Freestyle technique races on Saturday included 42K-plus, 21K, 10k, and 10k Adaptive races plus a 2K kids event. On Sunday, racers did the same distances in Classic technique.
Racers competed in 10-year age increments with competitors ranging from 4 years old to 80 years young and coming from as far as California and Wisconsin.
The 42K Freestyle Men’s race was won by Daniel Weinberger of Boulder CO in 2hr 14min 43sec while Joanne Reid of Boulder CO led the Women’s 42K finishing in 2hr 28min 48sec. The Male 42K Classic was won easily by Carlos Lannes of Superior CO in 2hr 30min 6sec who double poled the entire race using no kick wax in preparation for races in Europe. Diana Finkel of South Fork CO led the Female 42K Classic with a time of 3hr 19min 53sec.
Local racers did well including the Scholl family – Tyler Scholl (age 14) won the Male 21k Freestyle in just 1hr, 14sec followed closely by his Dad Shawn 1min 10sec later while sister Tabor (age 18) led the Female 21K overall in 1hr 5min 22 sec. Mom Stephanie was 5th overall at 1hr 16min 38sec also placing 1st in her age class. The next day Tyler won the Male 21K Classic in 1hr 7min 41sec with dad Shawn again 2nd, 1min 20sec behind. Sister Tabor took second in the 21K Classic behind Joanne Reid of Boulder who won in a time of 1hr 9min 54sec.
Other families were well represented like the Browers – Patrick in the 42K Freestyle, Mom Lydia Castiello in the 21K Freestyle, Sebastian Brower (age 13) won his age class in the 10K both days while Sylvia (age 10) was the youngest finisher in the 10k Freestyle.
Nathan Schultz from Boulder paced the Male 10K Freestyle in 30min 56sec while Hailey Leader of Boulder (age 14) topped the Ladies in 37min 9sec. Oksana Masters finished in 44min 19sec to lead the Adaptive 10k race. Wil Cleveland presented the Bear he won in 2008 in the 2k Freestyle Kids Race to this year’s winner Zack Larter from Boulder Colorado.
Other local finishers in the 42K Freestyle Male were Larry Steffen 2hr 39min 30sec, Jim Reed 2hr 49min 47sec, Jay Hunt, Patrick Brower, JP Ericsson, Jon Webb, and Kyle Harris. Local finishers in the 42+K Female were Nancy Citriglia 2hr 53min 33sec followed by Kari Gates.
Besides Tyler and Shawn Scholl, local Theo Loo (age 15) placed 9th overall in the Male 21K Freestyle followed by Dave Cleveland, Dan Jamison, Vince Hall, Craig Smith, Charlie Rau, John Laake, and Tim Schowalter. In the Female 21K Freestyle, Kelly Howard was second overall followed by Stephanie Scholl, Whitney Huber, Lydia Castiello, Tamera Davis, Julie Washnock, and Kathryn Harris.
The Male 10K Freestyle had many local finishers including Sebastian Brower (age 13) 5th overall, Wil Cleveland (age 14) 9th overall , Bob Peters, Calvin Conger (age 12), Guy Granger IV (age 12), and Bill Gardner. The top local finisher in the Female 10k was Sylvia Brower (age 10) followed by Sarah Webb and Diana Lynn Rau.
Sunday’s Classic races were fast on excellently prepared tracks with conditions like sunshine to shade and cold to warm temps creating tricky waxing. Carlos Lannes from Superior avoided the waxing issues by double poling the entire 42K course . The only local finisher was Jay Hunt in 3hrs 27min 19sec. The Female 42k Classic saw top local finisher Nancy Citriglia cross the line in 3hrs 23min 3sec followed by Kari Gates.
The popular Male 21K Classic was topped by Tyler and Shawn Scholl pursued by Theo Loo (age 15) 6th overall in 1hr 15min 46sec and followed by Jon Webb, Vince Hall (1st in age class), Bill Quinlan, Tony Linnan, Charlie Rau, Chris Michalowski, Roger Degroot, and Jeff Delzaney. Local finishers in the 21K Female Classic were Tabor Scholl second overall in 1hr 18min 22sec followed by Gretta Fosha, Karen Isibashi, Diana Lynn Rau, and Claudia Schaeffer.
Top local finisher in the Male 10k Classic was Sebastian Brower (age 13) in 42min 43sec. Sarah webb 52min 32sec was top local finisher in the Female 10k Classic followed by Fran McKane. Zack Larter again claimed the stuffed Bear in the 2k kids classic with Sylvia Brower right on his heels in one of the closest races of the day followed by Adrien Brower.
The toughest competitors raced both days with Tobias Albrigtsen (age 21) of Boulder topping the Male 42K Combined group and Diana Finkel of South Fork CO topping the Female group. Locals finishing both 42+K races were Jay Hunt, Nancy Citriglia, and Kari Gates. The best Male 21K Combined racer was local Tyler Scholl followed by Shawn Scholl, Theo Loo, Vince Hall, and Charlie Rau while local Tabor Scholl led the Female racers. The combined 10K female group was led by Abby Leuchten (age 14) of Boulder CO Madison Larter (age 11) and local Sarah Webb. Local Sebastian Brower led the Male 10K Combined group.
