GRANBY — Ski Granby Ranch will open with a 16-inch base depth on Wednesday, Dec. 11, after receiving a foot of snow over the past week.

The resort will be opening the majority of the east side of the mountain with Zig-Zag, Easy Money, Slot Shot, High Roller, Summit Glade South, Rod’s Way, Ghost Rider, and the south side of ballroom.

The Quick Draw, Milestone, and pony lifts will service the eight runs the mountain plans to open.

Last year the resort opened with only one run and very little natural snow, according to Wenda Huseman, vice president of marketing and sales for Granby Ranch. “We are looking forward to opening this year, especially with such great conditions,” she said.

The resort has also been making snow, and thanks to the cold temperatures in the past weeks, has been able to make snow nearly around the clock, Huseman said.

Skiers and riders can even score a free lift ticket this weekend by bringing in a bag of non-perishable food on Saturday, Dec. 14.

Crews on the mountain worked during the off season to widen the trails in Dean’s Glade on the west side of the mountain as well as added three access points from the catwalk above Dean’s Glade.

The improved access to, and widening of, Dean’s Glade will make the skiing in the glade more open and traffic free.

The mountain will also feature an upgraded rental fleet with brand new K2 sport and performance skis as well as an enhanced retail inventory that will include gear from brands such as Spyder, Scott, and Columbia.

Granby Ranch will open all of its amenities including the Granby Ranch Grill, which will have redesigned menu offerings including smoked salmon linguini, prok belly sliders, and potato encrusted mahi mahi. Granby Ranch will also be hosting Christmas brunch and holiday breakfasts in the coming weeks.

Santa Claus will also be strapping on the skis this year to take some runs with the kids from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Dec. 21-23.

On the list of events for the resort are some of the old standbys like Winter Wonderland at Granby Ranch, set for Dec. 20 through Jan. 5, where you can see the ice sculptures and Christmas lights, hear the holiday music, and hit the slopes in the dark during night skiing. The resort will host its Fireside Acoustics starting in January where guests can warm up inside the Granby Ranch Grill with an appetizer and drink while enjoying live music from favorites Kenny Lee Young, Branden Sipes and Eric Lane.

Family Movie Night will start at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 and will take place every other Saturday until March 8, when they will begin showing family-friendly movies every Saturday night. Movie nights are free, as is the popcorn to go with the movie. Parents are welcome to drop their kids off for the movie while they enjoy a date night at the Granby Ranch Grill.

The resort will also be hosting a number of new events this year like the Cool Hand Ice Show where professional ice sculptors will create interactive ice sculptures, give live demonstrations, and play ice games with you and your family. The ice sculptors will be performing throughout the day on Friday, Jan. 3, and Saturday, Jan. 4, followed by a live dueling chainsaw demonstration at 4:30 on Saturday. Participants can even come to play ice games and carve their names into the ice on Sunday, Jan. 5.

“Cool Hands is a very innovative company with a lot of guest appeal and we think they are going to put on an excellent show for our guests,” Huseman said.

Make sure to take part in the annual torchlight parade and fireworks display on New Year’s Eve starting at 6 p.m. and attend the New Year’s Eve party that will be following the fireworks. Toast your friends and family while partying into the New Year with music from a DJ in the base lodge where the resort will have cash bars and a buffet.
