If you want to participate in or watch an exciting Nordic skiing event, don’t miss the SWIX 2008 DTR Pursuit Championships being held at Devil’s Thumb Ranch near Tabernash on Saturday.

The race begins at 10 a.m. with a mass start for men. The women’s race will start at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday’s competition will use a “continuous pursuit format.” This means the skiers will depart the starting line and ski 7.5 kilometers using classic cross-country ski technique and equipment before reaching a “transition zone.”

Stopping as briefly as possible at the transition zone to switch equipment, the skiers will quickly get back on the race course to ski another 7.5 kilometers using cross-country ski skating technique. The winners are determined by who reaches the finish line first.

Skiers also have the option of just racing the first 7.5 kilometers using the classic technique.

Prizes will be awarded to overall winners and the top finisher in each male/female age class. The post-race feed is courtesy of Devil’s Thumb Ranch.

The race registration fee is $30. Register online at active.com, or in person at the Devil’s Thumb Cross Country Center. Preregistration in person is until 4 p.m. today.

SWIX 2008 DTR Pursuit Championships is one of the races in the annual Colorado Cup Series. For more information, go to: http://www.devilsthumbranch.com or call the Devil’s Thumb Cross Country Center at (970) 726-8231.
