Tailgating Granby-style, Fifth Quarter

On Friday, August 26, at about 9 p.m. local time, approximately 150 people – mostly clad in purple – stopped by Mountain Park Electric’s (MPE’s) Granby office. The crowd was buzzing about the Middle Park High School (MPHS) football team’s fourth quarter touchdown that propelled them to a 22-14 victory over the Aspen Skiers. The excitement left them hungry.

So following the game, they reassembled at MPE for hamburgers and hot dogs, soda and ice cream, and to revel in the post-game bliss provided by the Fifth Quarter.

Established in 1999, the Fifth Quarter Program turns MPE employees into food-service volunteers after Panthers home football games. They fire up the grills and feed the locals – for free, thanks to sponsorships from MPE and other local businesses.

“The Panther faithful come hungry and leave happy,” says MPE General Manager Tom Sifers with a crooked smile. “We’ve been doing this 18 years now. It’s become a bit of a local tradition. It’s good to see the community gather. This is one way that Mountain Parks Electric can provide a safe environment for students after the game.”

And so the tradition continues again this year.

The next Fifth Quarter Program is Friday, September 2 at MPE’s main office in Granby, immediately following MPHS’ football game versus Estes Park.
