The snow is finally melting for the season just in time for our Independence Day holiday. We can now start to enjoy some of our fantastic high elevation trails throughout the county.

This includes our historic Riflesight Trail located along Corona Pass road. Corona is rightfully named meaning “Crown of the Continent.” Corona road (also knonw as Rollins Pass or the Moffat Road) was named after the previous railway stop located the top of the pass in the early 1900s before the Moffat Tunnel was created.

At this time, trains from the Denver Northwestern and Pacific Railway traveled 23 miles up and over the Continental Divide, starting in 1903. RIflesight Trail is named after Riflesight Notch. This was a loop where trains crossed over a trestle, went through a loop, and passed through a tunnel underneath the historic trestle, which is still visible today. We now have access to the top of Corona Pass for the season to explore the beautiful and historic trails and stops along the way. Riflesight trail is one of our trails in need of an adopter. As you travel along it, you will find several damaged and eroded areas along this trail, both from early season travelers and our vast spring runoff that nature brings us each year.

To find out more about adopting this trail or others throughout the county, or to help support our local trail system, please contact Erica Bean, The Adopt-A-Trail Coordinator for Headwaters Trails Alliance at 970-726-1013 or at
