West Grand High School wrestlers are closing in on the end of their regular season.

Wrestling action continued in Nucla on Saturday, Feb. 5, when Austin Faeth (130 lbs) ended up 1-2. He faced off against opponents from Delta, Palisade, and Olathe. His record earned him a fourth place finish.

Landon Sneider (135 lbs) won his first match of the day against Olathe, but lost his next match against the tournament’s Number 1 seed from Delta. Sneider came back in the next consolation round to beat a Fruita competitor, winning in a dominant fashion by tech fall. He later lost his match in the Consolation Finals to the tournament’s Number 2 seed from Norwood. This hard-fought day earned him a fourth-place finish.

Max Wall (140 lbs) faced opponents from Fruita and Grand Junction Central. Although he wrestled well, his day ended at 0-2.

Lloyd Coleman (145 lbs) came out strong, winning his first match of the day against Fruita, but lost his following two matches to opponents from Delta and Grand Junction Central.

Chase Hill (160 lbs) dominated his first two matches of the day, pinning opponents from Palisade and Delta. He wrestled against a two-year personal rival, Brent Harris from Norwood, who is ranked Number 2 in the state by the Denver Post Colorado Preps.

The first period was a physical battle, with lots of stand up and head banging, but no scoring by either grappler. Harris earned two points in the second round with a reversal. And the match ended in the third period with Harris catching Hill and pinning him. Hill earned second place in the tournament.

Faeth went 0-2, Sneider 1-2, and Hill lost in the semi-finals to Acosta from Fowler, but came back to win his consolation final match that was well described by Coach Matney as “a real dog-fight” against Christian from Paonia, earning him third place.
