Starting the season with a win
The Middle Park High School football team started their season with a win when they defeated Fort Lupton 14 to 7 on Thursday, Aug. 30.
Fort Lupton, a significantly larger team with experience in 2A level play, hosted the game, but couldn’t capitalize on their home-field advantage.
“It’s a very hostile environment, being on the road,” said head coach Troy Schmidt. “Our kids came out right away.”
The Panthers scored first in the first quarter, and then again in the second with a long pass for a touchdown. Fort Lupton didn’t manage to score until the fourth quarter.
The Panthers team is a mix of returning players and up-and-coming freshmen. Several injuries during the game required the new players to take the field.
“We had some younger guys step up and play when they needed to,” said Schmidt. “It got a little crazy at the end.”
Panther defense held strong, and at the end Fort Lupton couldn’t make up the difference.
“Our kids played hard,” said Schmidt. “We just need to stay healthy, I can’t emphasize that enough.”
“This is the start of a great year for the Panther pride,” said Middle Park High School Athletic Director Todd Bitner. “It’s going to be a great year for our sports teams.”
The next game will be at home against Clear Creek on Friday Sept. 7.
